Wisdom teeth usually emerge between 17 to 25 years old and because this is the age that people are said to become wiser, hence the moniker “wisdom teeth.” These teeth can often pose problems due to their angle or positioning. At Teo Dental Surgery, our team has been performing wisdom teeth extractions and other surgical procedures for many years. We always ensure that we work to our level best to provide patients with peace of mind and a most pleasant experience.

Dr Benjie Law is our highly experienced in-house Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, specialising in the expert removal of complex and impacted wisdom teeth. With advanced surgical training that extends beyond general dentistry, he focuses on the intricate structures of the jaw and face to ensure even the most difficult extractions are performed with precision and care. By combining his technical mastery with a range of sedation options, Dr Law prioritises patient comfort, minimising recovery time and providing a safe, stress-free experience for those requiring specialised oral surgery.

COMFORT-FIRST DENTISTRY

One of Sri Petaling's First Sedation-Equipped Clinics

Dental anxiety keeps many people from getting the care they need, sometimes for years at a time. That's why we became one of the first clinics in Sri Petaling to offer sedation dentistry, giving anxious patients — and those undergoing longer or more complex procedures — a calm, comfortable experience from start to finish.

Whether it's a straightforward filling or a full smile makeover, sedation options mean treatment no longer has to be something you brace yourself for. It's one more way we're removing the barriers that keep people from the care they deserve.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Wisdom Tooth Surgery

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?+

Not necessarily. A wisdom tooth that emerges fully, sits in a healthy position, and can be cleaned properly may not need to come out. However, wisdom teeth sit at the very back of the mouth where they're hard to reach and prone to problems — impaction, decay, gum infection, and crowding are all common. Your dentist will take an X-ray to assess your specific case and advise whether removal is necessary.

What problems can wisdom teeth cause?+

Wisdom teeth are at the back of the mouth and can be difficult to clean, which can lead to a number of problems. The most common ones we see are:

  • Infection of the gum around the wisdom tooth (pericoronitis) — seen in around 50-60% of patients and the most common reason wisdom teeth are removed. It can be severe, causing pain and swelling, though sometimes symptoms are mild.
  • Tooth decay (dental caries) in the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front — seen in around 25-30% of patients. This may not cause noticeable problems until it reaches the nerve, at which point an abscess and toothache can develop.
  • Gum disease (periodontal disease) affecting the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front — seen in around 5-10% of patients. There may be no symptoms at all, but it can still cause problems.
  • Cyst formation around the wisdom tooth — seen in less than 1% of patients. All teeth form within a sac, and occasionally this can expand and enlarge over time, causing problems.

These are the most common reasons wisdom teeth may need to be removed. There are other, less common reasons your surgeon will discuss with you if relevant.

How long does wisdom tooth surgery take?+

A straightforward wisdom tooth removal typically takes around 60 minutes from start to finish. More complex or deeply impacted cases — particularly lower wisdom teeth that need to be sectioned or removed surgically — can take longer, as the surgeon works carefully around the surrounding nerves and bone. Your surgeon will give you a more precise time estimate once your X-rays have been reviewed at your consultation.

What should I expect before, during, and after the surgery?+

Before surgery, you'll have a consultation and X-ray (such as an OPG) so your surgeon can assess the position of the tooth and plan the safest approach. On the day, the area is numbed with local anaesthesia, and sedation options are available if you'd prefer to be more relaxed during the procedure. Most patients feel pressure rather than pain during the extraction itself. Afterwards, some swelling, mild discomfort, and slight bleeding are normal for the first few days — you'll be given aftercare instructions covering pain relief, cold compresses, and soft foods, and most people are back to their normal routine within a few days to a week depending on how complex the extraction was.

How much does wisdom tooth surgery cost?+

Cost depends on the tooth's position and complexity. A straightforward upper wisdom tooth typically ranges from RM250–RM350. Lower wisdom teeth that require minor oral surgery range from RM1,200–RM1,500 when performed by a general dentist, or RM2,200–RM2,500 when performed by our specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr Benjie Law, which is usually recommended for more complex or impacted cases. Consultation is free, and your surgeon will confirm exact pricing after reviewing your X-ray.
