Diagnosing Oral Lesions and Treating Jaw Cysts

We provide biopsy services to diagnose oral pathology and disorders. During the procedure, a small sample of tissue is taken and sent to a laboratory for analysis. A biopsy may be recommended to investigate a variety of clinical conditions, including lesions that could be pre-cancerous, so the right treatment can be planned early.

A cyst is a sac of tissue containing fluid or soft material, and can form in a wide range of tissues in the face and mouth — sometimes next to or around a tooth. While cysts aren't always harmful on their own, they're usually removed surgically, as they can weaken the surrounding bone or affect nearby teeth if left to expand.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Oral Biopsy & Cyst Removal

What is involved in a biopsy or cyst removal procedure?+

You'll first have a consultation and examination, along with dental X-rays to help assess whether a biopsy or cyst removal is needed. Biopsies and the removal of small cysts are usually performed under local anaesthesia. For larger cysts, a separate procedure under general anaesthesia may be arranged.

Is an oral cyst always something to worry about?+

Not necessarily — cysts aren't always harmful on their own. However, they're usually recommended for surgical removal, since an untreated cyst can gradually weaken the surrounding bone or affect nearby teeth as it expands.

What can I expect during recovery?+

Some discomfort for a few days after the procedure is normal. You'll be prescribed pain relief and antibiotics to support your recovery, and your dentist will advise on any follow-up care needed.

How long does it take to get biopsy results?+

Your tissue sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. Your dentist will schedule a follow-up appointment to go through the results with you and discuss next steps once they're ready.

How much does an oral biopsy or cyst removal cost?+

Pricing depends on the size and complexity of the lesion or cyst, and whether the procedure is done under local or general anaesthesia. Your dentist will confirm exact costs after your free consultation and X-ray.
