Bone loss in the jaw can happen for a number of reasons, including long-term tooth loss, gum disease, trauma, or underlying pathology. A graft rebuilds the height or width of the bone so it can properly support and stabilise a dental implant.

Some post-operative discomfort and swelling for around 3 to 5 days is normal. Your dentist will advise on pain relief and any care needed while the graft settles.

The bone graft typically needs 3 to 6 months to heal before an implant can be loaded and put into function, depending on the extent of grafting required.
